Series Wednesday: Timetopia page 6
We are
not far from the Questions hall, but before we can go in Rev prepares me with
the fake hair and nose. Looking at my drawing, I see the tracking room is the
third restricted room. The Questions hall is very different from the library
and the wellness centers. There are 30 wellness checkers, 20 mangers, 15-20 Questions
hall workers and that’s not even counting the visitors. I am afraid we might
not be able to even get in the room with that many people there. “We are going to
get your mom out don’t worry.” Rev says as she puts her hand on my shoulder.
“Thanks.” I tell her and we start to walk up to the Questions hall. “Hello,
welcome to the Questions hall. To your left is the room of answers and to our
right is the ideas room”, says one of the workers as we walk in. I take a deep
breath as I follow Rev. “So where is the tracking room at?” I grab my drawing
out of my bag. It seems to be down the left hallway, the forth room on the
right, next to the control room. I hand the drawing to Rev and point it out.
Rev smiles at me. “Let me do a pass by and see what we are working with.” Rev walks toward the room, I start to walk to
the answers room. That’s where I see a worker I know. She’s a few years older
than me, we all thought she would get erased because she was always so openly
defiant. I guess they just put her good Questioning skills to use. I see all
the kids writing their question on a piece of paper to take to the Question
master. “Do you have a question I can help you with?” I hear from behind me and
I take a deep breath, I wish Rev was next to me. I turn around and it’s Alexis,
the girl I knew from my school. “No thank you. I am just looking around.” She
looks me deep in the eyes. “Ava is that you?” How did she know? Oh no I’m in
trouble now. “How? Did?” I can’t even get the words out. She laughs. “Ava it’s okay, take a
deep breath. Whatever is going on I won’t say anything.” I take a breath of
relief. “Thank you” is all I can muster
up. “May I ask? Why do you look so different? What is going on?” says Alexis. What do I say?
Lying is never a good thing. “I have no idea. They took my mom and someone is
keeping her here. I’m not sure why or where. I need to use the tracking
system.” She looks at me for a second. That’s when out of the corner of my eye
I see Rev walking back up. “We need a key card to get into the room and that’s
if we can get past the guards.” Rev says before she notices Alexis in eye
range. “They have your mom in a Questioning room. That’s where they keep the
trouble makers. I have a key card to the tracking room. I’ll help you.” I’m not
sure why she is helping us. I want to ask but she motions for us to follow her.
Rev grabs me by the hand and we go.
We are
almost to the door making it through the crowd, when a wellness checker stops
us as we walk right up to the door. “What is going on here?” I hide behind Rev.
Alexis didn’t seem to hesitate. She says “I need to use the tracker.” to the
wellness checker, but he didn’t seem to like her answer. “Please sir, it’s my
little sister she hasn’t come home in a day. My mom is very worried.” Rev
sounds so sweet I just look at her. How is this the same girl I have been
traveling with? The wellness checker seems to like Rev because he smiles at her
and runs his hand down her cheek. “Well we wouldn’t want your mom to worry now
would we.” He moves out of the way. Alexis opens the door and we walk in. “EWWWW.
Good to see men are still pigs, at least that is still the same.” She is doing
a weird motion, she is wiping her arms off. Alexis walks up to the screens and
turns them on. The brightness from the screens light up the dark room with no
windows. “Okay I just need your mom’s bar-code.” I nod my head. “It’s 0456x3ub82.”
She pushes the buttons on the screen. “I hate how you say bar-code so casually.
Like oh no big deal that you’re all being tracked.” Rev says. Alexis looks at her confused. “It
says she is in room 18. That’s not too far from here, it’s just down the hall
way.” I look at the screen in disbelief that my mom is so close. “What are
these other lights?” I ask seeing a bunch of lights around the room. “They are
other people. It looks like two wellness checkers, a manager and a head
question master. What did your mom do? It’s a really big deal for a manager to
be there.” I take a deep breath. Rev pulls my hand for me to step behind her,
so I do. She steps in front of me, pulls out a knife, puts it to Alexis’
throat, and pushes her against the wall. “Why are you helping us? Why all the
questions? Did Richard tell you we were coming?” Alexis doesn’t seem afraid at all. She
motions for Rev to move the knife so she can talk. “You have no idea what I
have seen here. They don’t just erase people, they make them disappear where
you can still remember them. If someone asks the wrong questions about the Five
or how their technology works, we have to inform the head question master. It’s
not okay what they do. You have no idea. I beg you to kill me, please I can’t
keep doing this, it’s not the adults that kill my soul. It’s the kids. They do
not care what age you are. No one told me you were coming I swear. I don’t know
any Richard’s either.” Rev steps back as
Alexis falls to the floor. I had no idea anything like this happened in Timetopia.
She is crying on the floor she seems so broken. I can’t help but hug her. “How
do we get the guard to move so we can get your mom?” Rev is looking at the
screen. “A fire is the only thing they are told to leave their post for.” I
look at Rev and she nods. I guess we are starting a fire.

Series Wednesday: Timetopia Page 5
“SO…….
I’m not trying to be rude, but do you have a plan? Or are we just going to sit
here for a few more hours?” Rev is right, I need something. Some kind of plan. Then
it hits me. “We need to find out how the building looks on the inside to get my
mom out.” Rev throws her hands up. “Wow, it’s that easy? We can just walk into
city hall and get the blue prints. Right?” I sit there for a bit. “What is city
hall? Is that in the Bronx? And what is a blue print?” Rev sighs. “Great. You
don’t even have a city hall??? Where do you keep all you information at? The
great hall of knowledge or something ridiculous like that?” I think she is
mocking Timetopia. “Well we do have a library that normally where we keep
information at.” Rev just sits there looking at me. “You have a library? They
rename everything but they leave library. Okay.” Rename?? What?? There she goes
again making me question things. Whenever I try to bring it up she always blows
me off. I need to stay focused. “Yes the library holds all the records of Timetopia
from the beginning. So if we need the Questions hall layout then we need to go
to the library.” Seems simple enough to me.
Rev sits there, she is thinking it over. “We can go to any library there
isn’t a special one we need to go to?” I
don’t understand what she is asking, all the libraries hold the same information.
“We can go to any library. The one close to the Questions hall would probably
be the smartest.” There Rev goes again rolling her eyes at me. “Okay let’s do
it. I mean I can’t let you go on your own. Right?” I’m not sure why she is
asking me that. “Right.” I respond. She just looks at me and starts to head to
the library near the Question hall.
“Ava
wake up we are here. I swear you are always sleeping.” Rev is shaking me. We
are parked in front of the library. The large stone walls that hold all of our
history. We start to walk up to the library and Rev stops walking. “You have
got to be kidding me! No way.” she grabs a rock and throws it at the library. I
grab her arm and stop her from throwing another rock. “What is wrong with
you!?” I ask her. “Do you not see that the sign?” I look up at the words carved
into the library, the same words that are carved into all of them. “Yes I do. It says what they all say,
Knowledge is only what the higher power allows it to be.” She is now making
growling sounds. “I can read. But do you know what that means??? Do you know
what it really means?” I have never thought about what it meant, I just have
always seen it since I was born. “No I guess I don’t.” she starts to head
inside. “It means censorship.” Rev seems
to really dislike the sign. We walk into the library. “So where do we get the
blue prints?” I look back at Rev. “Blue prints?” she sighs at my question.
“Where is the buildings map?” I think I know what she is trying to say but with
Rev it’s always a guessing game. “I have to draw it.” I walk over to the how
our world began section. “What do you mean you have to draw it?” I can hear the
concern in Rev’s voice. “Trust me this is nothing I haven’t done a million
times. Me and my dad used to do this every weekend.” Rev shrugs, “I guess I
will just look around then.” I look back at her and a piece of her red hair is
sticking out of her fake hair. “Fix your hair. If they see it they will know
there is something different about you.” She fixes her hair and laughs as she
walks away. Now it time to get to work I watch the video and calculate how
their sizes would be scaled down into a drawing. I feel like only minutes have
gone by. “Dang, that is good..” I hear from behind me. I look to see my whole drawing
from different angles. “Yeah, like I said me and my dad did this all the time.
He taught me how to draw to exact scale measurements.” She is looking at my
drawing very closely. “This is good we can use this. Your dad was smart for
this one.” I look at her. “I’m sure all kids can do this.” she shakes her head.
“Most humans can’t do this. With that aside, this place is huge how are we
going to find which room she is in?” I
don’t know if huge is the word I would have picked. It has about 30 side
restricted rooms and 5 main rooms open to the public. I look at her for a bit.
“Well since we are going to be in the Questions hall we can just use the
tracking system.” I stand up and grab my stuff. “I’m sorry the what??? You
can’t say the tracking system and walk away.” I stood there looking at her.
“The tracking system implanted in us as children. It’s why we have the barcodes
on the back of our necks.” I stand there waiting for her to move. “You don’t
see anything wrong with that? They mark you like cattle.” I don’t understand why she is acting this
way. “You’re joking right, the Five did this so kids can’t be lost or taken.
There is no point of kidnapping children the wellness checkers will just find
you and erase you.” She tilts her head
at me. “Well you got me there. That is smart for kids. But what about when you
become an adult? They can track your every move.” I’m not sure why but I have
never looked at it that way. I have always felt safe knowing that I could
always be found if something bad was to ever happen. “It makes crime pointless,
they can find you no matter what. It helps people not to do things they would
have to run from because they can’t.”
Rev stands there looking at me. “Jaw dropped. That’s how I feel right
now with you. Jaw dropped. Let’s just go get your mom and get back on the road." We start to walk out of the library to
the Questions hall. Don’t worry mom I’m coming for you.

Random Short story: The man outside my window
Everyday around lunch time i see a man sitting outside my office window. I just assumed the man was homeless. i never once thought much of it. Until one day i saw him sitting there with tear in his eyes. i felt horribly bad for him. So i went to buy him a sandwich i thought it might brighten his day. As i tried to hand it to him he looked up at me. "I'm not homeless." he explains. Now i feel even worse. "oh i'm sorry sir. your just always sitting out here." the man laughs at me and that was the first time i really looked at his clothing. He had on a suit, not the makings of a homeless man. "Well sir might i ask why you are out here almost every day?" the man once again laughed at me. "You see the love of my life was kill here about 27 years ago." The man is visiting his wife's grave sight. "oh i see, do you mind if i asked what happen?" he motioned toward the floor next to him for me to sit. "No i don't mind at all. You see before there were these business buildings here, there was a beautiful park and every sunday me and my wife would come here for a picnic. It was something we had start back when we were high school sweet hearts. i asked her to marry me here. And here is where she told me we were going to be parents after many many years of trying. yes this park is where it all happened." Wow i now feel like i am sitting on a piece of some ones history. A whole love story happen here. "Sir that sound like a beautiful memory." the tear once again filled his eyes. "Yes it was. Until the day muggers decide to take her life. leaving me to be a single father. which why i never come here." i didn't understand the man. i had seen him every day for the past month. "but sir your always here." i explain. "Your right i am lately. it because i am trying to face my cowardliness." I am lost and way to deep in this mans story to turn back now. "How are you a coward sir?" his head sinks low. "well you see i could not be a father without her. so i gave up my daughter for adoption. and i never looked back." Now i understand a bit but not why he has come back. "Okay sir, but why now?" he looks at me. "i found a love letter from my wife in her old things. A letter i wish i would of found years ago. A letter talking about how if i was to be with out her she would hope our children would be my world. So i looked up my daughter and found she works in that building. Right next to where her mother was killed. She has no idea that her history started here." i felt bad for the man. i couldn't help but hug him. We both got up and he left. Weeks went by and the man never came back. The story some how stuck with me. So one day i told my parents the story of the man. Their reaction i didn't expect. My mother started to cry. That when my dad told me, I was adopted. That the man out side the window was my real dad.
