Poem: Life the battle

When you have seen all your life the fight.
When its your day you fight with all your might.
You know better than to be afraid.
For fear will only end you up dead.
This is not the war you might think.
For if it was...........
We would all be extinct.
No this fight is a funny one.
It is call life.
As a child you cant wait to get in the ring.
OR for the unlucky they are born already in it.
No this fight wont just take your life.
It will be all you are known by.
You failures and successions.
Life the ultimate battle of whits.
Who will make it?
Or who will sadly forfeit?

Series Wednesday: Timetopia page 24

We are walking back toward the city. Rev hasn’t said one word since we left James’ house. I wonder why he wanted to protect Rev so badly, but I don’t want to ask her. Half because I’m afraid she will bite my head off and half because I saw her face when we left and she looked sad. We’re finally in the city. “Plan stays the same. You take the test and get us the car.” Rev tells me. I nod yes. I start to walk to the library. Rev follows behind me. “How do you know where the library is?” she asks me. “Look around. All the cities in Timetopia are built the same. So That we will never get lost no matter what part of Timetopia we are in.” I don’t need to look at her to feel her rolling her eyes. “Yes because who would want each city to be their own and feel the spirit of the people living there.” I have no idea what she is talking about. So I say nothing in response. We walk up to the library time for me to take my test. I know how much my mom would of loved to be here. “I’ll wait out here for you okay?” Rev says. I walk into the library and go up to the desk. “I am here for the driver’s test.” I tell the lady up front. She smiles and point to one of the rooms. I walk over to the room and see the green light to go in. I sit down at the screen and the screen lights up. Words come across it to let me know this test will be an hour long. We don’t have time for an hour long test. My dad showed me a code to pass this test. We used to joke just in case I felt like I couldn’t pass. I wonder if this is why he showed me this code. Maybe my parents knew one day they wouldn’t be with me and I would have to do things fast. I wait until the test starts and I type in the codes. I end up getting a 95%, really? You would think my dad would of taught me how to get 100%.
I come out of the library with my new id. Rev is just sitting out front. Time to get a car and get out of here. We start to walk toward the car dealership. “Stop!” We hear from behind us. I turn and look behind us. It’s a wellness checker. Rev doesn’t even turn around. “I’m sorry sir, is there a problem?” The wellness checker looks at me for a second. “Yes, I need to talk to your friend.” I am not sure what to do. Rev slowly turns around. Well, here we go. “Your ear.” The wellness checker says. “Yes what about it?” Rev says confused. “Well you’re only allowed to have one earring per ear. It seems that you have two in each ear.” I stop breathing; I have never noticed she had two earrings in each ear. Rev smiles. “Sorry I am a bit of a rule breaker.” She steps toward him not breaking eye contact. The wellness checker takes a deep breath. “Well that’s not a good thing. I wouldn’t want you to get erased for having two earrings. You’re much too beautiful for that.”  Rev starts to take out her earrings. “Okay but only because you’re cute.” She smiles and the wellness checker starts to walk away. “That could have been bad.” I tell her. “Men are the same no matter what type of world you live in.”  We continue on to the car dealership. I go in alone.

Back on the road again for us. We start to head out of the city. I got us a four door, something not very noticeable so we can get out of here. I can’t help but think about my father… I wanted so badly to help him. I wonder if he knew how bad it was going to get for him. I know I never thought our lives would turn out this way. I thought Dad, Mom and I would always be close. I thought I would take work in the gardens harvesting food. I know everyone on my block would talk about how green of a thumb I had. Rev drives us out of town. I look out the window at the car behind us. It’s the wellness checker from the street. “Is he following us?” I ask Rev. “Yes he is. He has been since we met. You didn’t see him follow us to the car dealership?” If she knew he was following us why didn’t she say anything. “No, I would of said something if I did.” I go to look back at him, Rev grabs me. “If I wanted him to know that we know he is there I would have shot him. I am just getting him far enough from the city before we address him.”  I want to look back so badly but I am slightly scared Rev will hit me. So I just sit here for a second. “Are you going to kill him?” Rev tilts her head. “I’m not sure yet but I know for sure he isn’t just a wellness checker.”  If he isn’t a wellness checker who is he? “How do you know he isn’t just a wellness checker?” Rev takes a deep breath. “Call it trick of the trade. Plus he has a gun.”  I just look at her. I want to know what the she means or how she knows he has a gun but she will probably give me an answer that will leave me with more questions.  We are out of town now and I see him starting to speed up. “Are you ready?” Rev asks me but even if I say no it won’t change whatever it is she is going to do next. “Sure, I’m ready.”

Series Wednesday: Timetopia Page 23

Rev walks outside and James chases after her.  It’s just me and Erick at the table. “I never meant the world to turn out this way. I just wanted a world without crime and wars. I really did think at the time we were doing the right thing. But Rev is right. We somehow became the monsters we fought so hard against.” Maybe it’s because I grew up here in Timetopia but I thought it was amazing here. It’s all the things they hid that have been changing my mind. “What I don’t get is if you guys didn’t like war why would you allow James to make guns? Isn’t that asking for trouble?” He laughs. “Why yes it is. Which is why I was against it, but West had them made his year and Charles continued it the next year after during his. James didn’t make them my year.” Charles lied to me. He pretended to not know anything about guns in Timetopia. “Charles acted like he didn’t know anything about it.”  Erick’s eyes flared. “When did you see Charles?”  I can tell the answer I give him is going to change something. I’m not sure if I should tell him. I look out the window and Rev looks right at me, I must have a look on my face because Rev rushes inside. “I’m sorry I missed what we were talking about. How about you catch me up?” She says to Erick getting his attention on her. “She said she had spoken to Charles and I’m asking when.”  Rev looks at me. I still can’t seem to say anything. “Why do you seem like you’re ready to jump down Ava’s throat for the answer?”  Erick’s eyes are now glued on me. “Because Charles has been acting strange for some time now.”  Rev nods at me for me to tell him. “I saw him the night before the Switch festival.” He stands up instantly. “I have to go. I cleared away out of town for you. But once you get past the city I can’t protect you from the loyalists. They will do anything West and Charles tell them to.”  Rev looks at me. “STOP. You didn’t really answer anything for us. Just told us how this all came to be.” I tell him. He looks at me. “I am not the one who is going to answer your questions. When you get to your…” He just stops talking and looks at Rev. “To her grandma’s house.”  He nods yes. “She is the only one who can really give you answers. I just did what your mother asked of me. To show you my perspective so you can see more sides to this story.” Erick gives a half smile, fixes his glasses on his face, and walks away.
Rev waits until Erick is gone for a bit before saying a word. We both just stayed completely still. “Do you trust him?” Rev asks me. “I did, until the Charles thing.” Rev is still staring at the door he just left out of like he is going to bust right through. Rev then closes her eyes. “What are you doing?” I ask her. “I have a photographic memory when I want to. I’m trying to see if there is anything I missed.” She shakes her head. I don’t think she found what she was looking for. “We need to get going.” Rev tells me, I nod yes but I have one question. “What is a war lord?” I ask her, it has been bugging me. “They are people who feed off war. They profit from the death of others. That’s the only way I would know how to explain it.”  I look down. I am not sure what war looks like but I don’t think we are in one. “Are we in a war like Erick said?” I ask Rev. “I didn’t think so at first. But I am starting to think we are somehow in the middle of one. It just hasn’t hit the surface yet.” The surface of what? She walks back outside before I can ask. I walk to the room to grab my bag.  I can see through the window that Rev yelling at James while he is trying to walk away from her.

“You sold us down the river to save your own skin. What did they offer you?!” Rev is yelling at James. “Nothing, he knew who Ava was already and said he was working with her mom. He promised to get you out of the city. Erick is a good guy, I have worked with him for years.” Rev doesn’t seem to like his answer. “Well we are leaving right now. Ava! Are you ready?” Rev asks me. I am just standing there with all of my stuff in my hands. I’m not sure what else I need to be ready. I nod yes. We head to the front door. James steps in front of Rev. “Not fair. I am not the bad guy here. I just wanted to protect you. I get where you coming from in the bronx there was no such thing as kindness but here in timetopia its different, we care about our neighbors and I don’t want anything to happen to you Rev.” James is right in Rev’s face, this almost feels personal. I feel like I’m walking in on a conversation that has been going on for a while and I’m only witnessing the end. “Move James! Like I told you, this is OUR journey and there’s no room for anyone to stand in the way or tag along.”  Rev won’t look him in the eyes, it’s like she is looking right through him. “If you need me, you know how to reach me. I will be there if you reach out to me. I promise. I did what I did what I had to, you know that.”  Rev pushes him to the side and walks out the front door. “Ava please listen to me. Just yell Double O7 and the system will alert me. I will come to where ever you two are.” James doesn’t seem like a bad guy to me. I nod yes as I follow Rev out.

Series Wedesday: Timetopia page 22

We are all just sitting around the table looking at Erick. “Well, I’m sure all of you are wondering why I am helping you and how I know Ava’s mom right?” We all nod our heads yes. “Let me tell you my story first Ava, and then I’ll get into that in a little bit okay?” He is looking right at me. I feel like he can see all my secrets through his glasses. “Okay.” I say in response. “Let’s start with my back story. As you know, I am from over a hundred years from now. When I was born the world was broken up into a thing called countries. These countries would fight against each other for a thing called power. They would destroy homes and the lives of their own people for greed. They had governments running these countries. Government leaders were voted for by the people to make the hard choices for the best of the people, well at least that’s what they were supposed to do. I’m not sure where they lost sight of that. Half of the land was too toxic to live in after world wars 3 & 4. So most of us lived in communes where only the smart survived. I was always a scientist but my interest was the land. I would try to find a way to grow crops in the toxic soil. I found a way to take the toxins out of the soil, so I was very useful to my government. I didn’t know the toxins I had been working so hard to get out of the soil were being sold to the highest bidder and used against others. I wasn’t shocked when I learned this because that was just how the government worked. I tried not to get to involved; I had a beautiful wife and two children, so I did my job and went home.” He stops telling his story as tears start to fill his eyes. I put my hand on his arm to comfort him.  “I’m fine really. Let me finish. One day my job called me in the middle of the night and forced me to come in. That is where I found all the other scientists. They had called all of us in because of the bombing. Our government found out that there was going to be an attack and forced us into a bomb shelter, and… they left our families to die. They said they couldn’t fit everyone in the shelter. I lost my wife and two beautiful daughters that day. These kinds of wars are why we decided to build the machine to change things. We really had the best intentions.” Listening to his story makes me feel so bad for him.

“What does this have to do with us?” Rev asks so insensitively. Erick laughs. “You can’t understand your enemy if you know nothing about them.”  His statement lost me. “So are we your enemy?” I ask. He laughs some more. “No, but I also never thought Timetopia would become a place of oppression. This is not what I believed in, but there are some who would kill to keep it this way. I wanted you to understand that I am a not your enemy but I can’t control the extreme loyalists.”   I look at Rev. I still don’t understand. “I’m sorry I am still lost. What does this have to do with me and why they are chasing me?” He puts his hand on my shoulder. “It has everything to do with you. Your mom started a war here in Timetopia. It’s just not something you can see. She is having you change things unintentionally.” How am I changing anything? All that seems to be happening is that people keep dying. Why would my mom do this? I put my head down. “So what do I do now?” I ask him. “You make your way back…” Before he could continue. Rev cuts him off. “To your grandma’s house like your mom planned. Ava listen, whether you like it or not you are special. You’re meant to change things.” I am not the one changing anything. Rev is changing things; my mom brought her here why can’t she be the special one.  “No! I am done being the special one! You do it Rev. You’re built for that stuff.” Rev rolls her eyes. “Oh my god, drama queen I can’t be the one for this. That is just not how it works.”  I look at her. “Who is god?” Her mouth drops. She turns to Erick. “You took away god?!” She asks him. “Yes, we took away anything that would ignite war. So no religion, politics or currency.” Rev seems really upset by this. “You took away peoples beliefs and gave them what? The Five to believe in? You took away freedom of thought and speech and in return you got sheep.” Erick scratches his head. “I didn’t agree with that. I am a Buddhist myself, but we were trying to create a utopia.” Rev seems angrier. “When are people going to realize. A utopia is a fantasy. You murder or erase any one who doesn’t fit in this world for what? Peace? OR just control? This isn’t a utopia, this is just another fascist system but with dictators. You people are no better than the war lords you tried to stop by creating this land. I hope you see that.

Series Wednesday: Timetopia page 21

4 days have gone by and still no James. We aren’t sure what he said to them to make them go away, but they took him and never came back. Rev has been trying to find a way to override James’ locks, but it seems like they are unbreakable. They cleaned out Ron’s room as if he never was there. I have been watching where they are keeping my dad, but I haven’t reached out. I know they’re holding him in his room, so I’m working on a way to get him out. No more people need to suffer due to me.
“There has to be another way out of here.” Rev tells me like she hasn’t searched this whole house 10 times already. “How much food do we have?” Rev shakes her head at my question. “Enough to last us a few months.” I eat my fruit and walk back down stairs. We don’t close the door to the screen room, if we did we would never be able to get back in. I sit at the screens to keep watching my father, who is now back at work. I think my dad knows I’m watching. He looks at his screen in his office every time and shakes his head right as I want to say something to him, as if he’s telling me not to. I can hear Rev trying to break the front door again. She is persistent, you have to give her that. Rev comes running down the stairs. “That’s it we are going to die here. Let’s face facts.” She throws herself on the floor hitting the door. It slams shut with us inside the screen room. She jumps up and tries to open it but it has locked. “I agree we are going to die in here.” I tell her. She rolls her eyes at me. “Try the screens, maybe they can unlock it.” I shake my head at her. “The screens are connected to a server that isn’t here. They are not linked to anything in the house.” I sit down. Rev stops and thinks for a while. She is so silent I partly think she fell sleep. “Do you know what Nano bites are?” I shake my head no. I had never heard of them. “Do you trust me? I have a theory.” A theory? What does that even mean? I’m a little afraid to ask.  “Yes I trust you.”  She smiles and walks over to the lock pad. “Come here and give me your hand.” I walk up to the key pad and give Rev my hand. She pulls her knife out of her boot and cuts my hand and puts it on the key pad. The door unlocks for us. How does my blood keep unlocking things? This makes no sense. “What was your theory?” I ask Rev. “That you have Nano bites in your blood. That might be why your mom kept hiding you. Maybe you have always had them in you and your mom knew that any blood test would show that.” I look down at my hand. “But what are Nano bites?” We start to walk back up the stairs. “Nano bites are little micro computers that are programmed to do things, but that is just my understanding of them.” She shrugs like that should be good enough.  I don’t think she has the answer but at least her theory worked.

We are done packing all our stuff and we head for the front door. When it unlocks on its own and James comes walking through the door, Rev pulls her gun on him. “Where have you been?”  James walks right past Rev as if she and the gun weren’t even there. “He is coming to speak to you.” James says as he gets a glass of water. Rev follows him with the gun. “Who is coming?” I ask. “Erick.” Is that where James has been? “Too bad we won’t be here for that. We were just on our way out.” Rev pushes me toward the door. “He says he wants to help you Ava. He knew all about you and Rev.” How could he know about me I don’t even know about me. I put my hand on the top of the gun and push it down for Rev not to shoot James. “How long until he gets here?” I ask. “Something tells me not long.” I hear a voice from behind me at the door. I turn and there is Erick. I bow my head out of habit. “Hello Erick.” He laughs. “Hello Ava.” He walks in and closes the door behind him. “Traitor! You sold us out!” Rev yells at James. “Rev, James didn’t sell you out, not that he would even know what that meant. I took the flyer down and I cleaned up a few things for your journey.” Erick walks over to the table and sits down. He motions to the seats around the table for us to sit. I sit down first. “What can you tell me about why I am different?” I ask him. He laughs. “Before I tell you, there’s a reason I’m here, something I have to say. Maybe everyone should be seated and without weapons.” He looks at Rev. What is a weapon? He must mean the gun. Rev put the gun on the table. “I am putting it down, but I am not putting it away. I don’t know you and I owe you no kind of respect.” James sits in the seat next to Rev. “Fair enough, but I am not your enemy. I am just here to help. Ava’s mother is a friend of mine.” My eyes widen, I can feel it. He knows my mother. How?
