Series wednesday: Timetopia Page 51

I sit in the gardens watching my mom work on the plants. Time seems to just fly by when I watch my mom. I always knew I got my green thumb from her. “Where’s Rev?” I hear Kora ask from behind me. “Oh you know Rev, she could be anywhere.” I’m not sure why I said that. I just have a feeling like Rev wouldn’t want anyone to know where she is. “Well, why don’t you find her? We need to go over the next one on the list.” Kora says like the list is long, she is act like there is more than just West and Charles left on the list.  I walk back to the house and get the orb. I think of Rev, drop the orb, stick my hand in and pull her out.  “That was longer than an hour.” Rev says as she stands up. “Sorry I was sitting with my mom in the garden, time got away from me.”  I explain. She laughs. “It was nice to have more time, but you do realize I was there for 3 days.” I look at Rev. How is it that I left her for 3 days? “No… I thought you were there for 3 hours.” She smiles. “So what reminded you to get me?” I almost forgot. “Kora wants to go over the next one on the list.” Rev looks at me. “I hope it’s Charles so I can kill him finally.”  She starts to walk out into the living room.

“So, who is next?” Rev asks as she walks in the room. “That would be West. It wouldn’t be smart to go after Charles since he knows you’re here. He’ll be waiting for you to make a move, even if he isn’t sure what that move is. He will have to be last.”  I sit down. “Okay, so then tell us about West.” I say as I look at all the papers on the coffee table. “Wait are we going to do this here?” Rev asks. “What do you mean?” Kora asks. “Well we always do the break down at the table. So, if we’re going to do the break down we do it at the table… with food.”  I can’t help but laugh. Kora shakes her head. “West will be the hardest to get the orb from.” I pick the papers up off the table and start looking at them. “Okay just ignore me. I’m going to at least cut up some fruit while we do this.” I can’t help but laugh at Rev; she always has to have something to say. I look at the paper clipping about genetic mutation. The government required all embryos to be mutated, they were all to be enhanced. “So West was born to this country I am guessing.” Kora looks at Rev cutting fruit in the kitchen. “Yes he was raised in what was known as America.” Rev stops cutting fruit at what Kora says. “Wait, no way! I did not just hear you say that in the future America requires little baby eggs. There is no way the people would let that happen, they would rally and fight!”  Rev says as she walks over to us with her bowl of fruit. “There was a bad war on U.S. soil. They poisoned the water and as a result, people were no longer able to have babies. They were dying in their mother’s uterus. Genetic mutation was the only way to save their country.”  Rev sits on the floor with her bowl of fruit. “So, they’re going to poison our land… Who does it?” Rev asks while looking through the paper with me. “It doesn’t matter. All that matters is that West is unlike most people you have ever seen. His muscle regenerates faster than you can hurt it. He is built for war and he was trained his entire life to fight.” Kora’s voice makes me slightly fearful of West. “Is this true about America?” Rev asks, holding a piece of paper. “What is it?” Kora asks. “That there is only 100,000 people left?” Kora grabs the paper out of Rev’s hand. “No, this isn’t true. There was no more America when I met West. It had all been destroyed.”  Kora says as she hands back the paper to Rev. “Oh.” Rev says as she looks through more of the papers. “Most of the world had been destroyed when we left. That’s why we built the orbs. To try and fix the world’s problems. I’m not really sure how that changed. How we went from saving the world to trying to run it… I might never know.” Kora seems upset. I definitely don’t want to tell her about the fact that I don’t want to give up Timetopia. I know no matter what I decide to do, I need all the orbs. Whoever has the orbs has the power. “How did they know genetically mutating the embryos wouldn’t make some funky humans? I mean didn’t they think that the kids would come out with two heads or some other weird deformity?”  Rev asks Kora. I feel like this would be the perfect moment to tell Rev that she is one of the reasons they know. “They tested on Embryos for hundreds of years in secret.” That’s it! That’s all Kora has to say. NOW! I sit here holding my breath but nothing.   “Yep, in secret and lies. Sounds about right. Let me guess governments did it for years and years? They were probably funding underground laboratories.” I look down, Rev has no idea. “Yes of course that’s how it always was with governments.” I get kind of mad because it seems like that is happening here to. “Don’t they do that here to?” I ask, and Kora’s face drops.

Series wednesday: Timetopia Page 50

Rev and I sit on the floor waiting to hear Kora’s story. “A.I. is such a preemptive term for what it actually is. So… do you want to hear about China first or about what the orb really is?”  I look at Kora... I am unsure what China even is. “Hear about China first!” Rev says. “I thought you might say that. Let’s sit at the table for this. I will make us some tea.”  Kora starts to make a pot of tea as me and Rev sit at the table. “Well China was known for its’ cutting edge technology. In 2055 they decided to go completely hands free as they were calling it. They let an A.I. handle everything for them. They connected their homes and all of their fully automated appliances. It worked for a while but it ended up just like the movies... The computers kept getting smarter and the people got less intelligent.  One day the A.I. decided there was no longer a need for humans. Let’s just say fully automated cutting stations might not have been the best idea. Hundreds of thousands were killed. The United Nation had to drop bombs on the server rooms just to get the people the A.I. were holding hostage free. After that, A.I. technology  was banned.” Rev’s mouth was open. “So, you’re telling me that’s how China went out? Like a horror movie!?” I look at Rev. “It’s a form of entertainment that scares the entertained.” I smile at her. She knew exactly what I was going to ask. “Why would anyone want to be scared? That makes no sense.”  I ask Rev. She shrugs. “It is just fun and a rush. There is no way to really explain it besides that.”  Rev says. “So how is the orb not like a A.I.?” I ask.
“Well there are many differences between them, but the main and most important would be the way it thinks. Artificial intelligence gets smarter the longer it is on. That’s the whole point of it. However, what we created doesn’t get any smarter than it is. It can learn, but not the same way the A.I. would. We studied dog’s brains. Dogs are very intelligent but they are loyal to their owner. So we studied why? We found a lot of interesting things. We created a living brain that’s sole purpose was to serve us. So we linked the brain to our blood. It is a very long process to explain but more or less that’s how it works for us.” I feel confused. “What? That doesn’t explain how the orb time travels.” Rev says, which is also something I was wondering. “That’s the crazy thing. I have no idea. It just has no concept of time the way we do.” I look at Rev because Kora’s answer don’t really answer anything. “Okay… so you made it and it just was able to time travel. You didn’t really do anything?” Rev says. “Yeah pretty much.” Kora laughs. “So you have no idea how it really works?” I ask. “We do and we don’t. I understand it more or less but the fine details not so much.”

I wake up to Rev sitting on me. “Wake up! There’s bacon!” She gets off me and walks to the kitchen. “Where is James?” I ask as I sit down. “I had to send them back to their time.” Kora says. Rev looks up from her plate of bacon. “What? We didn’t even say good bye.”  Kora puts a plate of waffles on the table. “If everything goes as planned they will never be born so it won’t matter that you didn’t say bye.” Kora says with no emotion. “Yeah I guess I never thought of it that way.”  Rev says. She was right, however I never thought of it much that way either. Will all the people from  Timetopia go? They will just be no more. “Thanks for breakfast, I should go make sure all the guns are loaded and ready.” Rev nods her head towards her room. “Here, I’ll help you?” I ask her,not sure if that’s what she wanted. “Oh I would love the help. Thanks Ava.” I follow her to the room. “I have to say good bye to James. Even if he will never be born. I have to say good bye.” Rev seems so passionate about this. I wonder why. “How are going to say good bye??” She smiles and pulls the orb out of her pocket. “Well I was thinking we could use this to bring him here. Or even send me to him. Just to say bye. Then send him back or bring me back whichever is easier.” I think about it for a bit. “I’ll send you to him. But just for an hour.” She smiles. “That will be more than enough time. But i dont want to see old James, I want to 26 year old t James. The one we left on the side of the road. he is the one i have some things to explain to.” I put my hand out for her to give me the orb. She hands it to me and I picture James. I drop the orb and Rev smiles and walks on through.  I hope she gets finds the good bye that she is looking for. I walk out living room. My mom is sitting there waiting for me. I am so happy to see her. “Would you like to go for a walk?” She asks me. I nod yes. We start to walk outside and make our way to the garden. I can already see my mom has put her own touch. “Spending a lot of time out here?” I ask her. She laughs. “I always thought that if I could be anything it would be a tree.” I laugh at how simple my mom is. But I love her still.  I can’t think of a life where she isn’t born, but what does that mean for Kora’s plan?

Poem: Slow slumber summer night

Slow slumber summer night.
How i long for a reason to fight.
With all the wars fought around me everyday.
You would think i would have a reason to get up and say HEY!.
But for some reason I find my lone existence to be a miss.
There is no war that reaches this little  princess.
So i go on with my pointlessness.
Look for a reason or rhythm.
Something for me to devote my time.
I find nothing no path, no fight, no beauty in the amber light.
So i lay here staring at this boring sight.
With no dream in hand and no hope at heart.
I am uneventfully useless.

So why keep on?
Why even try to sing life long song?

One day i open my eyes,
To see clear injustice in my line of sight.
What do i do??
Should i walk away and say it does not effect me it isn't my fight?
NO! i will not let some one else lose their might.
I run to fight.
I stand up for everything i now know to be right.
I will not lose even if i fight alone.
For the idea of justice is my wake up call.
Now i realize all the fights i thought were not mine.
Were not just one person fight.
We are one under the bright sun.
We must pick our fights.
But to have no fight at all.
Is to be deceased or dry wall.

Series Wednesday: Timetopia page 49

James is standing there just looking at Rosaline on the floor. She hasn’t woken up yet. She hit her head on the table when Rev threw her through. She isn’t dead, but she is out. She starts to move around and slowly opens her eyes. “DAD?” she says as James stands over her.  “Rosa what happened? What did they do to you? Are you okay??” James runs his hands through her straight blonde hair. “James why don’t you give her a second to breathe? We need to have a chat.” Rev tells James and he nods yes. “Ava can you watch after her?” James asks me. “Okay.” I tell him. But I don’t think she is going to be happy with me watching over her. Kora sits next to me on the floor. “This is why we do not throw people through time.” She tilts her head over towards Rosaline. Rosaline wakes up completely and is shocked to see Kora. She sits up and starts to fix herself. “Kora, it is an honor to meet you.” She bows her head. This was something I was taught to do. We were never told to bow our heads to anyone. Something has changed already, I can tell just by her actions. “My child of Timetopia, tell me why you have turned on your own father.” How did kora know she turned on James? Rev walks back in the room. “He knew you were a traitorous piece of crap and he still had us save you.” I jump up to grab her. She seems like she is ready to hit Rosaline. I know it isn’t right, but at the same time I can understand her anger. “Kora I did what Lily asked of me… I am loyal to The Five.” Rosaline says and Kora’s face changes. “Loyal to The Five??? Why would you say it that way?” Kora asks her. “Because I am. Loyal to The Five and all that The Five stands for. Always knowing what is right for us.”  Rosaline sounds like she has memorized this. I wonder if that’s what I used to sound like.

Kora looks at me and starts to stand up. “Ava, why don’t you show her to a room so she can get some rest. Come back out here once you’re done.”  Kora walks away and Rosaline gets up to follow me to her room. I show her inside her room and head back to the living room where James has calmed Rev down. I am not sure how he can do that but he sure has a way with her. “I need to talk to my daughter. There are things that need to be said just between us.”  James says as he kisses Rev on the forehead and heads to the room. Rev looks me. “He knew the whole time. He knew she was working with them. He said she’s his daughter and that’s all that mattered to him. She sold him out, and he was in hiding.  He left Rosaline’s mother a long time ago. She didn’t take it well and she turned on him, so he had to go into hiding because of the laws. There’s no such thing as divorce here?”  Rev asks me. “I’m not sure what divorce is, so I’m not sure how to answer that. But he would still have to hide if he left her, because once you get married you sign a legal contract that says you must spend the rest of your life with that person. Or you get erased. His wife must not have turned him in.”  I have never in my life heard of any one leaving their life. Once you find someone or they match you, that’s it. You must be happy, why wouldn’t you be? You have the one person that you’re meant to be with. This makes no sense to me. “James knew about divorce due to the books West let him read. The one he had made here from his memories. Well we all helped, they were our favorite books from our timeline. I was always a little shocked west trusted James with access to them.” Kora walks in and just stands there. “So, James learned a lot about your guys’ lives then?” I ask Kora. She starts to laugh at me. “No, most of the books we brought back were fictional. I don’t think any of us want documentaries here.” Kora says as if I know what a documentary is. “What? Some documentaries are so educational. They show us things that most don’t get to see behind the scenes.”  Rev shrugs. “Okay, do they have any about A.I.?” I ask Kora.  “Yeah, let’s talk about the A.I. Why the hell didn’t you tell us that those orbs are not time machines but instead some kind of robot?” I look at Rev. “Robot?” What is that? I look down on at the orb and it starts to light up. “NO NO NO!!! You get that thing to stop!” Rev screams at me. “What is an A.I? Why are you so mad at it?” I ask her. “Because if you have ever watched any movie about it ever, you would understand. Let me tell you how the movie goes. Ready?! Let’s start at the beginning. Let’s set the scene… scientist, “Oh I found a new way to be lazy. Let’s let this computer think for me. Oh it will make the world a better place.”  And then BAM! Computer decides that humans are too flawed and tries to kill us, and oh everyone in the movie is always all shocked like oh no who saw this coming?  Next thing you know, it’s war between us and the computers every time. So if that thing is A.I. I want nothing to do with it.” Rev says not break eye contact with kora.  “Fine I’ll tell you everything, but after what happened to what you know as china… Don’t think we weren’t careful.” Kora seems to give into Rev’s demands. So I sit down on the floor ready to listen. “What happened to China? Aww man I wanted to visit there some day.” Rev says in a sad voice.

Series Wednesday: Timetopia Page 48

We make it to the Questions hall. “What’s the plan?” Rev asks me. “I’m coming with you. How am I supposed to come up with the plan?” I tell her, “I don’t know these places like you do. So yes we need a plan.” I start looking around, but the Questions hall is closed. There is no plan that will get us in without being noticed. "Honestly there is just no way for us to get in without being seen." I tell Rev. "Yeah I figured and we don't have enough firepower to blow them all out of the water."  Rev says, looking in her back pack of guns and goodies as she calls it. Nothing good comes out of that bag. I sit there wondering how I’m going to do this. We can't just walk in. "Whatever your thinking, stop. The orb is lighting up again and freaking me out to be honest. Knowing that is A.I. like all those movies." Rev shakes her shoulder like she has the chills. "I look down at the orb. It has a map of tunnels that run under the Questions hall to the basement. There seems to be an entrance to the tunnels just down the road. The orb came up with a plan. I really need to ask later what A.I. means.

We’re walking into the tunnels with the orb leading us. "I’m not sure how comfortable I am following that thing." Rev says. "Fine, find your own way then." I tell her as I climb down the ladder into the tunnels. "Oh really, you're going to get sassy now?" I laugh at Rev. She slides down the ladder.  There are so many tunnels down here. I can't believe I didn't think of this. I would need a detailed drawing to get through them.  The orb lights the way for us all the way there.  It leads us into the basement where they keep the people that the doctors see. I look at Rev. "She’s on the second floor." I tell Rev. She steps out in front of me with her gun in hand and points at the stairs. The hall ways have a few people in them, but not many.  We move past them to the stairs without anyone noticing.  We run up the stairs to the second floor and when we get on the floor there she’s waiting for us. Rosaline just stands there. "Would you like some tea?" she says.  Rev looks at me. "You need to come with us." Rev tells her.  "It is very impolite to not even respond to someone’s request." What a weird response. "Do forgive her, she isn't a Timetopian like you and I. I would not care for some tea at this time, but I do have a request of you." I tell her as I point to the sofas in the waiting area.  "Is your request the same as hers?" She says as she sits down. "No, I do not wish to take you with us. I just wanted to speak to you, if you don't mind." She points to the chair in front of her. “Okay let’s speak. What would you like to discuss?” I sit down, but Rev just stands there with her gun still in her hand. “Why would you let them take James? Your dad?” She tilts her head at me. “Have you really forgot what it was like to be a good Timetopian? Nothing comes before the greater good of the community. Selfishness is death to us all.” She says the words that I was taught my whole life. Words I once proudly recited with honor. “Who in the hell decides its selfish to love your parents!! Tell me who decides what the greater good is for the community?!”  Rev yells so angrily. “You are an outsider. You wouldn’t understand. Unlike my other sister, I didn’t idealize the ruthless law breaker in my father’s stories. I admired my mother who strived to be the model Timetopian.” James told stories about his time with Rev. I wonder if he talked about me? Judging by the look on her face though, probably not. “So you don’t like me? I can understand that. But turning on your father… that is something I can’t understand. James sent us to get you and protect you.  But you don’t deserve it or a father like James.”  Rev says as she points the gun at Rosaline. “The wellness checkers, the managers and the hounds  are circling the building as we speak. Lily set off an alarm which set a plan in motion. You’re not getting out of here. So go ahead and point your archaic weapon at me.”  She talks to Rev in a way no Timetopian has ever talked to anyone. She is acting like Rev is not good enough to be talking to her. This is something as children we are taught never to do. There is something very different about her. Rev laughs. “Time to go to James, Ava.” She nods her head at me. I grab the orb out of my pocket. Time to go to James. I throw the orb on the floor to open the way. “What are you doing?” Rosaline asks me. “We are taking you to one of the Five. So she can tell you what it is to be a good Timetopian. She might even be able to tell you how to be a better daughter.” Rev says to her. “Wait, is that a time machine? But how can you use it?”  Rosaline asks me. I smile as she stands to get a closer look at the orb. “I’m Kora’s daughter that’s how.” She turns back to look at me. “What do you mean you Kora’s daughter? That’s against the rules.” I laugh at her. “Is it now? I haven’t heard that.” I say to her. “Time to see daddy.” Rev says as she grabs Rosaline by the throat and throws her through the opening.

Series Wednesday: Timetopia Page 47

“Do you know what a firewall is?” I ask Rev. “Yes I do. It’s a computer program that keeps unwanted eyes from looking at its’ software.” I look at Rev with what must be a puzzled look on my face from her response. “Okay, computer software was not my strong suit. I was always better with my fist.” Rev smiles like that helps. I pull up the screen and start looking through the cameras. Okay if all the cameras are linked together here… Then they must all be linked together, but I’m not sure how to get to them. I close my eyes and think. If I think of the computer as a body and think of the screen as the brain… then the brain can control much more if you let it. I have to clear the mind and get to the codes. So I get to the codes and try to pull up the cameras in the other building. There is a code stopping me like a wall. Oh I get it firewall, that makes sense. I wonder if there is a way to climb over the wall. If only I could see all of the codes. There has to be a way.  I stand here and think, how could I possibly pull up the codes? “Ava what are you thinking about?!”  Rev asks me in an alarming voice. I look at her and she is pointing at the orb in my left hand because it’s lighting up. I am not thinking of a different time, but just how to get past the code. Why is it lighting up? I look at the orb and hold it to the screen. The codes start floating off of the screen and it’s all around us. The orb is projecting the code. I am looking at the code around me and I see how it’s keeping me out. “How is the time machine showing me the code?” I ask Rev and Lily starts to laugh. “You think that’s all it is? A time machine? It is A.I. one that doesn’t  just travel through time. It is so much more then you can imagine.” Lily is trying to sit up with her hands still bound. Rev’s face is in shock. “An A.I.?” is all that comes out of her mouth.
I pull up Rosaline on the screen. She looks like James, sitting at a desk working. She doesn’t look like she is being held against her will. She looks like it is just any other day. “So what’s the plan now?” I ask Rev as my eyes are glued to the screen. Doesn’t she know they have her dad? Rev’s eyes are angered, I can see it. “We are going to get her!!! James wants his daughter we are going to get his daughter.” Rev says determined.  “Okay but how?” Rev looks at Lily.  “First we have to make sure she doesn’t tell anyone we are coming.” She grabs Lily by the hair and starts to drag her. “Where the hell are you taking me?!” Lily screams. Hell? What is that? I never have heard of this place.  It must be in some other time. I can’t believe I am even saying that. “I am throwing you in the trunk of the car so I know you’re nice and close to me. Just the way you are going to love to be.” Rev says as she is dragging her. Lily laughs. Rev drags her all the way to the car sitting outside the house. “The wellness checkers will be on their way soon. If they aren’t already here.” Lily says. “Oh I am not worried about your wellness checkers.” Rev throws her in the trunk and slams it shut.

“So, are we ready for this?” Rev asks me. I look down at the orb in my hand. We could just go home. James’ daughter is safe and happy I don’t see why we need to go get her. “Please don’t be mad, but I think we can count this one as a win. Let’s go back to Kora. There is no reason to go after James’ daughter. She is clearly safe and what if she doesn’t even want our help? What if we just get there and there is nothing we can do?” I ask Rev. “Look, as much as I would love to lock Lily in this trunk for the rest of her days… I gave James my word. I am not going back without even talking to his daughter. If I have to go alone I will understand.” What does she mean by that? “I would never let you go alone. I will always go with you. Like you would for me.”  I start to walk over to the passenger seat. I hear motorbikes coming toward us. We know what that means. “Get in.” Rev starts the car and speeds off and we drive right past the motor bikes. They see us and start following us. Rev points to the back seat where the back pack is. I don’t know how she does that. She can keep that back pack no matter what. As long as there is a weapon in it she can hold on to it. “Shoot the tires out.”  She tells me. I grab the hand gun out of the back pack and start trying to aim, but I keep missing. “I can’t do it. They keep moving too fast.” I tell Rev. “I got this. Grab the steering wheel.” I grab the wheel and she jumps into the passenger seat, I hop into the driver’s seat. Rev sticks her head out the window and shoots out the tires with ease. They start falling like flies. We are now on our way without problems.
